Leroy is the product of Darkstone's first breeding, as well as his sister "Peanut" AKA Darkstone's CH "In a Nutshell." After purchasing our first show quality female, Bella (CH Aramar's Belladonna of Cara), and showing her to her CKC championship, we got the urge to try our hand at breeding. We selected what we considered to be a very good fit for Bella, genetically speaking, and had her artificially inseminated. The stud dog chosen was Am/Can CH VCT Hannibal Von Seigerhaus AKA "Hank." Hank was the #5 rated AKC male Rottweiler that year, and demonstrated many attributes that we appreciated. He had a great head, dark eye, significant bone, and a very nice top line. He looked very much like his famous ancestors: Am/Can CH "Amos" Von Seigerhaus and Mex/Can/Am/Intl CH "Quick" Von Seigerhaus. Amos, Leroy's grandfather, had made a significant impact on the breed at that time at stud.
We will always remember Leroy as our "little handful," as he literally fit in the palm of our hand when we brought him home from the vet clinic at one day of age, after Bella had given birth via a C-section. He was actually quite a runt of a puppy, much smaller than his sister "Peanut." However, Leroy grew up to be a strapping 27" at the withers, with one of the nicest heads you will see on a male Rottweiler. Leroy was shown only a handful of times, but easily finished his Canadian championship. Unfortunately, we did not train and socialize Leroy extensively, and he was rarely off the acreage for the first three years of his life. At around three years of age, he was looking great, so we decided to show him. So, a handful of personal training sessions later, and with only a few visits to an off-leash park for socialization.Leroy hit the show ring. He did just fine, but never really enjoyed "the game." So, after his championship was done, we decided to retire Leroy from the show ring, as it was obvious that he was not taking any joy from the experience, unlike our other "show dogs." Why force him to do something he was not going to learn to actually enjoy? Leroy is a large dog, as mentioned, being a full 27" at the shoulder, with significant bone and substance. He is very well proportioned. Leroy has a great head, the exact type we prefer: short, square muzzle, 90 degree stop, large fore skull, dark eye. He has a very "hard" expression. He is very deep in chest, and has a very nice, straight front. Leroy has an excellent top line. We would like Leroy to have more rear angulation than he has, given the current fad of over-angulated dogs, but by breed standard his rear end is very acceptable. Leroy has very nice movement, reaching well with his front, and driving well with the rear. He "floats" very nicely for a large dog, and his movement is effortless. Leroy also has a very short, straight, ideal coat. While we tend to take great coats for granted on all of our Rottweilers... this is not always the case. We have seen too many instances of long, wavy, or curly coats on what are considered to be "show quality" dogs. This is not correct, and no amount of "stripping out" can disguise a poor coat. A curly coat is a disqualifying fault in a Rottweiler, yet we see semi-curly coats in the ring all too often. Leroy has full dentition, and a tight scissors bite. Leroy underwent both the OFA and the Pennhip examination and scored "GOOD" and in the 90th percentile, respectively. Leroy has been used at stud, and throws a huge amount of bone and substance into his puppies. He seems to throw his head and top line, as well as his size, but the female seems to throw the rear end in the puppies that we have seen. Frankly, this is ideal, as great stud dogs are those that throw "better" than their own conformation, and throw their strongest attributes, not their weak points. At the time of this writing, Leroy is 5 ½ years old. His mother Bella is still with us, going strong at 11+ years old.as feisty as ever. |
